PORT VILA, VANUATU, April 16, 2009
/24-7PressRelease/ -- The heavy handed humour of the Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has once again put him in the hot seat, when he discussed the tent cities. Thousands of homeless residents of L'Aquila, have had forced to flee, after Italy's deadliest earthquake for thirty years. A thirty second earthquake of 6.3 magnitude, devastated the central region of Italy before dawn on April 6th. 1000 after-shocks continued to bring more buildings crashing down.
Prime Minister Berlusconi was speaking to a group of international journalists. "It's just like a weekend camping trip. They have everything they need." Berlusconi did promise not to abandon the victims of the quake.
"We are sleeping four in a bed, with up to fourteen to a tent," said one very upset survivor, as she looked around at the cramped quarters underneath the blue canvas. "The temperatures drop very low at night, we have no showers and the children are terribly traumatized. I'd like to see Prime Minister Berlusconi come and try it for a weekend."
It has been a somber Easter for the local residents of L'Aquila, huddled together in more than thirty tent cities. Thousands have been injured and the survivors remain edgy and angry. They are asking why so many modern buildings collapsed?
Prime Minister Berlusconi, along with government leaders, joined 10,000 people in a very emotional open air state funeral Mass on Good Friday. The national day of mourning was declared for the nearly 300 victims of the earthquake. Many parent's coffins were overlaid by the smaller white coffins of their children. News of other victims were still coming in even during the funeral Mass, as rescue workers continue to work their way through the rubble. Berlusconi declared the state of emergency over and the search for survivors ended on Sunday.
The L'Aquila earthquake was extremely deep, at 28 kilometers, occurring after a 4.6 magnitude earthquake had shaken Italy's north central region, near Ravenna.
