Institute of Medicine (IOM) report
Retooling for Aging America, the looming health care crisis results from rapidly increasing numbers of aging baby boomers with complex diseases, but insufficient resources to care for this large population of people born between 1946 and 1964. Drugs generally only suppress symptoms, not promote health. It's time to implement safe, effective natural therapies that promote health and healing.

The FDA essentially approves of only patentable medicines ('designer drugs,' pharmaceuticals). Natural therapies cannot be patented. Therefore many promising natural approaches are left 'orphaned' not because they are ineffective or dangerous, but because they are not patentable and will never get FDA approval. This situation militates against research, manufacturing, marketing and integration of thousands of safe, effective and inexpensive health-promoting natural therapies into clinical practice guidelines, which could help prevent or lessen the impact of the health care crisis.
