That's Good Medicine - with Dr. William Campbell Douglass III MD, MS - is an audio program and blog dedicated to exploring the integration of natural therapeutic modalities that promote health, lessen disease and minimize baby boomers' burden on the health care system.
The looming health care crisis is due to large numbers of baby boomers entering retirement with complex health problems, but insufficient financing and insufficient numbers of health care practitioners to take care of the 'boomers.' Most drugs (patent medicines) block and suppress symptoms, but do not promote health. Now is the hour for the quick implementation of safe and effective science-based natural therapies and lifestyle practices that promote health.
The FDA essentially approves of only patentable medicines ('designer drugs'/ pharmaceuticals). Natural therapies cannot be patented. Therefore many promising natural products are left as 'orphans' not because they are ineffective or dangerous, but because they are not patentable and will never get FDA approval.
This situation militates against the research, manufacturing, marketing and integration of thousands of safe, effective and inexpensive health-promoting natural therapies into clinical practice guidelines, which could help prevent or lessen the impact of the health care crisis. While policy makers explore various options such as health savings accounts and tax relief for private insurance companies and citizens, we must also aggressively explore and integrate many of the therapeutic approaches from the realms of natural medicine which promote health and prevent disease.
