CIRENCESTER, ENGLAND, October 28, 2009
/24-7PressRelease/ -- Mike O'Brien, Minister of State for Health Services and MP for North Warwickshire, accompanied a WRVS Meals on Wheels volunteer on deliveries on Friday 9 October 2009, as part of national Meals on Wheels week. Mr O'Brien took part in the delivery to see at first hand the vital work of the older people's charity and talk to older people about the difference the service makes to their lives.
WRVS in North Warwickshire is responsible for providing around 250,000 meals each year to those who need it. Meals on Wheels is just one of the ways WRVS helps older people to stay independent and live the life they want.
Mike O'Brien said: "The service WRVS provides for older people is invaluable. Older people who can't get out not only get a meal, they have regular contact with someone they know and trust, and who can make sure they're safe and well."
Lynne Berry, WRVS chief executive, added: "We're very pleased to have the support of Mike O'Brien, and we'll be working with him locally and nationally to improve services for older people. We're very keen to ensure this issue stays high on the political agenda."
WRVS launched its election challenge, Help us make Britain a great place to grow old, at the Party conferences this month, calling on the next government to commit to four pledges to make Britain a great place to grow old.
The charity's election challenge calls on politicians and other policy makers to:
Change attitudes to old age
Reform social care
Join up services for older people
Empower people to help each other and themselves
