"Healthcare Management by the Numbers: Management 101, the CMS 411 and Compliance 911", published by the National Council for Community Behavioral Health, was available for the first time at the National Council's annual training conference in Boston. It is sold exclusively via the National Council's website at www.thenationalcouncil.org.

This is the third recent collaboration of these regulatory compliance professionals, Dr. Donald Jones, Derek Jansen and Roya Rezai, CHC. In 2003, the three authored "Documentation, Coding and Billing of Mental Health Services", also published by the National Council, and in 2006 "Clinical Documentation and Operational Issues in Community Healthcare" was published.

The current work recognizes that many managers in the healthcare profession began their careers as clinicians. Often they were promoted because of the quality, effectiveness, and efficiency with which they provided care to people. Suddenly they are thrust into the world of employee management, budgets, Medicaid, and regulatory compliance. Building Management in Healthcare by the Numbers provides a wonderful overview of the information new managers and even experienced managers need to be effective in their roles in an organization.

Divided into three key sections, it focuses on the basic information needed. Management 101 presents an overview of and specific information in being a manager including principles of management, personnel supervision, and budgeting. CMS 411 provides critical information about the federal funds which pay for the services in healthcare. Compliance 911 addresses managers' roles in ensuring accountability in an era of increased regulation and enforcement.
Healthcare compliance is a relatively new industry, born out of the government's crackdown on Medicare and Medicaid fraud. Compliance professionals come from a variety of backgrounds including medical practice, law and government.
