Since 1993, Dr. Rhee has been living his dream as a professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at Sogang University in the Republic of Korea. He is particularly well-known for his development of the solid-state lithium battery technology, which excels over its older counterparts as the first step in developing the next generation of lithium metal and lithium air batteries. Most importantly, Dr. Rhee's technology is designed to prevent the explosion of lithium batteries, which still proves to be a challenge to the development of electric vehicles, smaller handheld devices, and other technologies that rely on small, high capacity, portable energy sources.
Dr. Rhee became a professor for the opportunity to do his own research and change the world with his discoveries. Born in Pusan in Republic of Korea, he initially studied with Seoul National University to build a background in Chemical Engineering, and earned a Master of Science in the subject from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. With a chance to research in the prestigious Institute of Materials Science (IMS) polymer science program, Dr. Rhee was able to travel to the University of Connecticut to earn a PhD in 1987.
Soon afterwards, Dr. Rhee was immediately accepted as a senior researcher and acting head of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology, a center of research with divisions in green city technologies, polymer research, and other vital technologies that rely on batteries to power many of its key components. Dr. Rhee's technology takes a page out of the biomolecular structures of nature to develop polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells, nanoporous ultralow dielectric materials for next generation semiconductors, solid polymer electrolyte for lithium secondary batteries, and even photovoltaic cells that store power generated in the heart of the sun.
In support of his efforts, Dr. Rhee has enjoyed membership with the Electrochemical Society and the Materials Research Society, as well as a seat with the board of directors of the Polymer Society of Korea since 2010. He has been presented with numerous awards, most recently a 2015 Best Poster Award from the Korea Chemical Society and a 2013 Best Poster Award from the International Conference on Applied Electrochemistry. Notably, Dr. Rhee is the recipient of Excellency in Research Awards from the National Research Foundation and the Korea Science Foundation, which helped to bolster his efforts in the mid-2000s. He was selected for inclusion in the 2012 volume of Who's Who in the World. In coming years, Dr. Rhee is confident that he will be a chief technology officer at Midas Materials Company, Ltd., continuing to develop revolutionary advances in polymer engineering. In addition, he has been a director of Research Center for Samsung Display Company in Korea since 2014.
