Press Release July 2, 2009
Helena V. Hicks Has 30 Years of Experience with the Federal Emergency Management Agency

NEWPORT, VT, July 2, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Helena V. Hicks, Assistant Specialist Program Representative for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in all aspects of emergency services.

Ms. Hicks has 30 years of professional experience with FEMA. As assistant specialist program representative, she is responsible for assisting disaster victims in the continental United States, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico by opening large disaster recovery centers, gathering information, and conducting exit interviews to ensure that people's needs are met. Known particularly for her skill in obtaining necessary information from confused and distraught disaster victims, she was honored with a congratulatory letter by Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and with several awards for social and blood services in Vermont by the American Red Cross. Ms. Hicks was inspired to devote her career to emergency services after losing her home to a fire at the age of 9; with no one to help them, she and her family lived in a garage until they rebuilt their house. She considers assisting others who have gone through a similar predicament to be the most rewarding aspect of what she does, and attributes her success to her hard work and earnest desire to serve God by helping others.

In addition to her work for FEMA, Ms. Hicks serves as the town service officer of the City of Newport, for which she places homeless people in temporary housing on the weekend until their situation can be addressed the following Monday. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration in 1974 from the Community College of Vermont and completed coursework in human services from Emmitsburg Institute of Learning. She is a former president of Vermont Rural Letter Carriers, a former grand representative of the Order of the Eastern Star New Mexico, a former president of the American Legion Auxiliary, a former matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a former district president of The American Legion Auxiliary of Newport, VT. In her spare time, she volunteers with United Church of Derby, as a historian for The American Legion Newport Post 21, and as executive director of the American Red Cross.
