SAN ANTONIO, TX, April 26, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Healthcare executive Herman Wright Jr., who held key leadership roles at three Fortune 500 companies in a career that has spanned nearly a quarter century, has joined WellMed Medical Management in the newly created position of Senior Vice President - Sales and Marketing.

Wright will focus on WellMed's markets outside of Greater San Antonio, such as the company's medical clinics in Austin and along the Treasure Coast of Florida.

Wright also will work with WellMed's executive leadership team to develop Physicians Health Choice (www.phccares.com), the health insurance company offering a selection of health plans to Medicare beneficiaries in New Mexico, Arkansas, Florida and several Texas markets outside San Antonio.

"Herman is one of the critical hires WellMed has made in recent months," said WellMed Chairman and CEO George M. Rapier III, M.D. "Herman will take a lead role in positioning WellMed for continued growth and delivery of effective, quality healthcare to seniors in our communities."

Wright said he was excited about the opportunity to direct WellMed's progress in emerging markets.

"I love the WellMed philosophy - its focus on wellness and on the whole person and its commitment to the senior population," said Wright, a former U.S. Army officer in the 1st Infantry Division. "The San Antonio operation is the crown jewel for WellMed. My job is to take the best practices from San Antonio and make sure that they are implemented in markets across the country."

Wright is sure to draw on his impressive track record to make that happen. From 2003-05, he was a Senior Vice President and Emerging Markets Officer at Health Net of California, one of the state's largest health plans.

At Health Net, Wright oversaw the successful development of California's 300-staff state health program, with 1 million members. Wright supervised membership enrollment efforts in emerging markets including the Latino and Asian communities, as well as the Medicare, Medi-Cal, Healthy Families and AIM programs. He also led innovative efforts to bring cross-border healthcare to Latinos in California and Mexico.

Wright also has been a marketing and sales leader at Amerigroup Corp. (Virginia Beach, VA), United Healthcare (Chicago, IL) and Prudential Healthcare (Austin, TX).

At Amerigroup, Wright presided over membership growth from 70,000 to more than 1 million (1998-2003) helped the company achieve revenue growth of $1 billion. At United Healthcare, he established marketing, communications, advertising and market research for the Midwest Region and a program to fund college education for at-risk high school students. At Prudential, he was critical in the health plan's growth from 15,000 to 145,000 from 1986 to 1995.

In recent years, Wright has focused on businesses outside of healthcare, most notably ranching and filmmaking. His 500-acre East Texas cattle ranch, Wright Brothers Cattle Company, has been in the family since 1874. His film production company MC3 Company produced the 2005 documentary The Long Black Line, which chronicles, in part, his family's history and the story of more than 5,000 schools established in the South at the turn of the 20th Century to educate African-American children just a generation removed from slavery. He also established a non-profit 501c3 organization, The LongBlackLine.org, that works to preserve those schools and their history.

Wright earned his B.A. from Texas Christian University and a law degree from the University of Texas at Austin. He and his wife, Debra, are the proud parents of two adult daughters, Elizabeth Blalock of Los Angeles, CA and Lauren Wright of Boulder, CO.
