HIE Debate Continues Between Public and Private Models

Although the HIE market is still glutted with options, KLAS reports that certain vendors are winning more bids than others in the private and in the public HIE markets

OREM, UT, January 10, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- KLAS reports that while providers are juggling a laundry list of priorities--meaningful use, ICD-10, RAC audits, and accountable care models, HIEs are still of high interest to many providers. In the report, "HIE Perception 2011: Public or Private?" KLAS interviewed 96 healthcare executives to uncover which HIE vendors were selected in 2011 and why.

"There's still an ocean of options out there," says Mark Allphin, report author, "and with all the market hype it's still hard to see which vendors are really cresting to the top. What we are really finding is that there is no one-size-fits-all HIE vendor. The selection depends so much on the provider's needs and priorities."

Different HIE vendors cater to public and private HIEs, with competition from both enterprise EMR and best of breed vendors. Top vendor selections in the public market were Axolotl, InterSystems, Medicity, and Orion Health. Those reported to be winning the most private deals were Cerner, dbMotion, Epic, Medicity, and RelayHealth.

Findings showed that providers were equally split between selecting a public and private model. However, for some providers, private models beat out public HIEs because of better data control and funding sustainability. Private HIEs typically go live faster than public options, but need heavier integration and interfacing.
