PRINCETON, NJ, October 15, 2008 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The David Sarnoff Library will celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the radio broadcast of The War of the Worlds by Orson Welles and the Mercury Theatre On The Air, with a live, re-enactment of the historic event on Saturday, October 25, 2008. Tickets are available for the public to attend the theatrical presentation at the Sarnoff Corporation Auditorium in Princeton.

First presented on October 30, 1938, the broadcast that detailed a Martian invasion in Grover's Mill, New Jersey and sent thousands of radio listeners into the streets in panic, will be "broadcast" with transmission through authentic 1930's microphones and radios to create the ambience of the original show. Actors from the Hunterdon Radio Theatre will present the show at a 2:00 PM matinee performance and an 8:00 PM evening performance. A special benefit reception will be held after the evening show where attendees can meet the actors, view the Library's exhibits and enjoy desserts and more provided by Grover's Mill Gourmet Coffee and Tea, Lindt Chocolate, McCaffrey's Bakery, Wegman's and Sotto Ristorante. Patrons will also be treated to musical entertainment from renowned concert thereminist Kip Rosser.

The War of the Worlds Halloween Celebration is a part of the Library's Martians For Education Festival and proceeds raised at the event will benefit the Library's Field Trip program. The Field Trip Program has been developed to provide increased opportunities for school-aged children for important and fun science education.

"We are looking forward to expanding this program that gives young students the chance to learn about radio and computing," said Library Executive Director Alex Magoun. "The two-hour programs educate and inspire children to learn more about the practices and consequences of science and engineering and, we hope, to consider science careers."
