LOS ANGELES, CA, June 13, 2009
/24-7PressRelease/ -- Richard P. Brown, MD, co-author of the new book How to Use Herbs, Nutrients, and Yoga in Mental Health Care (WW Norton, January 2009), and internationally renowned pioneer of CAM (Complementary and Alternative Medicine), will give a two-day workshop for the public entitled "Breath~Body~Mind", on Saturday, June 13, 2009 from 10 am to 6 pm, and on Sunday, June 14, 2009 from 12:30 pm to 5 pm, at 4 West 43rd Street, between Vanderbilt and 5th, New York City, NY (about a block from Grand Central Train Station). Pre-registration at Serving Those Who Serve (stws.org) is advised. Course fee for the general public is $300; it is $75 for 9/11 Responders, $125 for full-time students, and $200 for caregivers and health care practitioners. All proceeds assist STWS to continue to offer holistic healing programs for the 9/11 Community.
Dr. Brown will teach a sequence of breath, movement, and meditation practices including Victory Breath, Coherent Breath, Moving the Breath, and Open Focus Meditation. These practices enhance well-being by balancing the stress response system, releasing old stress, reducing tension and anxiety, and improving stress resilience. "With daily practice, many participants report improvements in their energy, quality of life, and physical health," says Dr. Brown.
Dr. Brown is Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University in New York. He is a certified teacher of Aikido (4th Dan), Yoga, Qi Gong, and meditation. He developed a neurophysiological theory on the effects of yoga breath on the mind and body, particularly its benefits for stress, anxiety, depression, and trauma.
Dr. Brown is an expert on holistic approaches to psychiatry, including the use of supplements such as SAM-e and Rhodiola Rosea and mind-body practices. He co-authored The Rhodiola Revolution and Stop Depression Now. Dr. Brown maintains a practice in New York City.
Dr. Brown's book, How to Use Herbs, Nutrients, and Yoga in Mental Health Care, was co-written with Dr. Patricia Gerbarg, and Dr. Philip Muskin. Dr. Gerbarg is Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at New York Medical College; Dr. Muskin is Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and Chief of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry at New York Presbyterian Hospital.
