/24-7PressRelease/ -- Hollister Kids, the educational division of Hollister Creative, was chosen this fall to work with Michigan's Skillman Foundation to create a weekly magazine to promote literacy and reading among elementary students in Detroit schools.
The program is a partnership between The Skillman Foundation and the Detroit Free Press that promotes literacy through an eight-page weekly magazine called "Yak's Corner."
The magazine, whose mascot is a book-loving Yak, features articles and activities geared to elementary readers and encourages students to "yak" about what they have read with classmates and parents.
Activities are crafted each week to increase students' vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. A back-page teaching feature showcases non-profit organizations Skillman supports that provide services for children, families, schools and neighborhoods.
The magazine is available as a download from the website http://www.yakscorner.com as well as in the print edition delivered to classrooms.
Hollister staffers Rachel Vigoda, Martha Michaela Brown, Heidi Karl and Peter Landry provide writing, editing and graphic design services to create the weekly magazine in collaboration with the editorial staff of the Detroit Free Press.
Created in 1960, the Skillman Foundation is a private grant-making foundation with a mission to support non-profit organizations that promote literacy and strengthen neighborhoods.
Though Skillman makes grants throughout Metropolitan Detroit, the bulk of grant dollars are spent in six low-income neighborhoods and on innovative school and education programs in the City of Detroit.
