TAMPA, FL, May 18, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Is yawning becoming a habit? Do you go to bed early and still feel like you aren't getting enough sleep? Maybe it's because you aren't. Many people who are sleep deprived have an underlying reason, such as a sleep disorder. One of the most common sleep disorders that plagues people's nighttime is obstructive sleep apnea.

There are three forms of sleep apnea, but obstructive sleep apnea is the most common type-it obstructs the airway and disturbs a person's sleep. Some people wake up multiple times a night, and it also affects loved ones because snoring is a direct result of a collapsed airway.

Since obstructive sleep apnea is now becoming properly diagnosed thanks to sleep studies, health care professionals are able to develop treatment options to reduce symptoms.

Dentistry offices across the U.S. are also helping their patients by taking a look at the jaw's function in relation to the obstructive sleep apnea. As a result, many sufferers of sleep apnea are undergoing oral appliance therapy. And Dr. Alicea now also offers sleep apnea treatment in Tampa.

"Oral appliance therapy is a common route taken to help alleviate sleep apnea symptoms. A customized mouthpiece pulls the lower jaw forward, and this helps open the airway. Removing the obstruction can improve and hopefully regulate your sleep patterns," explains Dr. Alicea, Tampa dentist.

To schedule an appointment for a sleep apnea consultation, Tampa residents can call (813) 288-9700. Or go to www.yourdesiredsmile.com for additional information.
