NEW ORLEANS, LA, May 25, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ --Dr. Howard H. Russell, Jr., Physician at Tulane Medical Clinics, has been named Cambridge Who's Who Professional of the Year in Internal Medicine. While inclusion in the Cambridge Who's Who Registry is an honor, only two male and two female members in each discipline are named professionals of the year. The Cambridge Who's Who selection committee chooses these special honorees based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements and leadership abilities.

At 71 years young, Dr. Howard H. Russell, Jr. brings to Tulane Medical Clinics an enviable depth of experience and an unfading enthusiasm for his profession. Noted for his expertise in internal medicine, allergy and nephrology, he manages patient care and education, makes house calls for elderly patients, renders medical consulting, and instructs staff on hospice care. He also performs an administrative function as the medical director of two nursing homes and teaches as a clinical professor of medicine at Tulane Medical School.

Over the course of his 40-year career, Dr. Russell conducted kidney research and worked as an internist at a private practice. He also lent his talents to the United States Public Health Service as director of hemodialysis and allergy. His dedication to his patients and profession tried and tested, he played a crucial role in evacuating patients from his clinic at the height of Hurricane Katrina. Despite losing his home and all his belongings in that disaster, Dr. Russell soon returned to New Orleans, where he had always loved practicing medicine. Once cited with an award for "Best Bedside Manner," he credits his compassionate nature for his success and longevity.

Dr. Russell completed his residency in internal medicine in 1967 and his internship in 1964. He obtained his MD in 1963 from Tulane Medical School and is board eligible in internal medicine, allergy and nephrology. His professional affiliations include Louisiana State Medical Societies and the American College of Physicians. He has been named in "Best Doctors in America" on numerous occasions and was selected by New Orleans Magazine as "Best Doctor" and by Tenet Healthcare in New Orleans as "First Place Physician."

In his free time, Dr. Russell volunteers his services to patients who cannot afford healthcare. With retirement far from his mind, he looks forward to continuing his practice, in order to keep a promise he made to his wife to keep on working as long as he remained healthy.
