Howard Loucks Steele, PhD, Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

An accomplished listee, Dr. Steele celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Economic development consultant and author Dr. Steele has lived a very well-balanced life doing what he loves. After completing his Bachelor's degree at Washington and Lee University in 1950, he spent several years as a sales manager for Greenville Dairy Company, and by 1955, he had founded H.L. Steele Bulk Milk Hauling, also in Greenville. While running his business, Dr. Steele also began a second career in higher education at Clemson University as an assistant professor and later as an associate professor for just under a decade.

Following his stint at Clemson, Dr. Steele taught at The Ohio State University as an associate professor for seven years. In 1971, he began working for the Foreign Agricultural Service/International Cooperation and Development of the U.S., Department of Agriculture, where he spent the next 26 and one-half years.

Today, Dr. Steele works exclusively as a consultant in economic development, which he has been doing since he retired in 1997. Throughout his career, he has also become a well-known author in his field, publishing six books: "Comercializacao Agricola (Agricultural Marketing): A 200 Year History of Some Descendants of the Pioneer James Steel of Castleblaney, Ireland and Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania,""Your Tax Dollars at Work (I'd Rather Have Gone Business Class!)," "Food Soldier," "Bushels and Bales: A Food Soldier in the Cold War," and "More Food Soldier Encounters." He has contributed numerous articles to professional journals over the years as well.

Dr. Steele also spent time as a visiting professor at the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil, as an instructor at the University of Maryland, as a liaison officer for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Furthermore, Dr. Steele has served as a project manager for the Agency of International Development in Guatemala, Bolivia, Honduras, and Sri Lanka, on the Bureau of Latin America and Caribbean United States Agency for International Development in Washington, as an officer of the director of technical assistance division, and with the office of deputy administrator. A member of Sons of the American Revolution, Masons, the International Association of Agricultural Economists, the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association, and Shriners, as well as several fraternities, Dr. Steele is the recipient of a National Forensic Union Award, was named One of Outstanding Young Men in the U.S. by U.S. Jaycees, and received a Certificate of Merit through the Department of Agriculture twice.

After graduating with his bachelor's degree, Dr. Steele went on to complete a master's degree at Pennsylvania State University and a PhD at the University of Kentucky. He has been included in nearly 50 editions of Who's Who.
