Hudson, WI Pediatric dentist Dr. Mancini recently explained the branch of Orthodontics for patients.

HUDSON, WI, October 06, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Orthodontics is the division of dentistry that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of dental conditions involving the positioning and alignment of the teeth.

The number one reason people see a provider for orthodontics is to correct what is known as a malocclusion. Literally interpreted as "bad bite", a malocclusion refers to an incorrect alignment of the top and bottom teeth when the jaw is in the bite position.

There are a wide variety of possible malocclusions that our Hudson, can easily identify by examining the bite visually and with x-rays. Some of the most common malocclusions are overbites, under bites, cross bites, open bite, and misplaced midline.

The most common cause for bite problems is a discrepancy in the size or shape of the jaw compared to the teeth. A small jaw, for example, may not have enough room for all of the teeth to fit properly, or unusually small teeth may shift in a large jaw; both conditions can result in a malocclusion. These types of bite problems are usually simply due to genetics.

Certain defects such as a cleft palate or chromosomal disorders that don't allow the jaw to develop properly can cause severe malocclusions, as can extended thumb sucking or pacifier use, or tooth loss due to decay or accidents.

While most malocclusions don't affect physical health, left untreated they cause crooked or gapped teeth and can even change the appearance of the face. Certain bite problems can cause unintentional grinding of the jaw and may lead to pain and problems with the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).

We have a wide range of treatment protocols for malocclusions. Braces are what's known as a "fixed" appliance-because they stay permanently on the teeth for the duration of the treatment period-and are the most common tool used in orthodontics. We may also use retainers, palate expanders and spacers to correct malocclusions. Treatment for severe overcrowding may involve removing one more adult teeth.

Children seeking orthodontic treatment have more options today than in the past. Today's braces have smaller brackets and thinner wires, and Lingual Braces are an option for those who don't want visible braces at all. Lingual braces are very similar to traditional braces but the metal brackets attach inconspicuously to the back of the teeth. Invisalign is a very popular treatment for adults because the clear plastic trays are removable and discreet.
