/24-7PressRelease/ - ST. LOUIS, MO, May 09, 2007 - Lee Biosolutions announces the availability of Human Hemoglobin to clinical researchers worldwide at leebio.com. Hemoglobin is the molecule in red blood cells that carries oxygen. It combines with oxygen in the lungs and is responsible for releasing it into the tissues. Human Hemoglobin is also responsible for the red pigment in blood.

Hemoglobin makes up roughly 97% of the dry content in red blood cells and about 35% of a red blood cell's total content. A molecule of human hemoglobin consists of 2 pairs of peptide chains (alpha and beta globins) and four heme groups, each with one atom of iron.

According to Lee Biosolutions President Burton Lee, Human Hemoglobin is the latest in a long line of products the company has introduced recently to meet the demands of clinical research professionals.

"We know we're not the only biomaterials provider out there," Lee said. "So we've made a real effort to set ourselves apart as a premium provider by focusing on the 3 most important areas in our industry- purity, consistency and service."

Mutations in the genes for the human hemoglobin protein are the cause of a group of hereditary diseases called the hemoglobinopathies. The most common of these diseases are sickle-cell disease and thalassemia. The hemoglobinopathy of sickle-cell disease was the first disease to be understood in its mechanism of dysfunction, completely down to the molecular level.

Hemoglobin levels are among the most routinely ordered blood tests, typically as part of a complete blood count. The amount of oxygen in the body tissues depends on how much hemoglobin is in the red cells. If there's too little, the tissues lack oxygen and the heart and lungs must work harder to try to compensate. Low hemoglobin levels are usually indicative of anemia. High levels may be caused by polycythemia vera, a disease in which too many red blood cells are made.

Lee Biosolutions is a leader in the biomarker industry, providing the quality products to clinical labs and researchers around the world, developing tomorrow's cures. The company has provided the materials used in a number of high profile biomarker studies.
