ACT! SPEAK! BUILD! WEEK
- LOS ANGELES, CA, March 31, 2008 - Today, hundreds of young people from more than 25 schools and youth organizations in Greater Los Angeles will embark on a campaign to tackle the affordable housing crisis. ACT! SPEAK! BUILD! Week unites local students who partner with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (www.habitatla.org) to plan and host a wide range of student-initiated events focused on ending poverty housing. Their efforts will be part of a worldwide Habitat for Humanity initiative through which thousands of young volunteers will educate themselves and their communities about the need for affordable housing and move people to social action.
"Through our Youth United programs we have seen the extraordinary accomplishments of our youth as young as five years old," says Erin Rank, president/CEO Habitat for Humanity GLA. "When we encourage them to get involved, they have the power to change lives and build hope in the community. They are the future leaders who will continue our mission to help eliminate poverty housing."
During ACT! SPEAK! BUILD! Week young people in the greater Los Angeles area will speak out on behalf of people who are living in substandard housing and whose voices are not being heard. The week and all its activities are student-initiated and student led. Youth ages five to twenty-five can build, fundraise, advocate and/or take on leadership roles to support Habitat for Humanity's mission to end poverty housing. Scheduled events include affordable housing simulation activities, building birdhouses to represent the housing need in Los Angeles and circulating a petition in support of the National Housing Trust Fund.

Week include Animo Venice Charter School; Gage Middle School; Garfield High School; Institute for Maximum Human Potential; La Serna High School and Los Compadres 2009 Maroon.
