/24-7PressRelease/ - January 28, 2006 - High blood pressure (Hypertension), affects 2 million new Americans every year and the amount rate of high blood pressure among Chinese people has grown by 31 % with the number of patients up more than 70 million, compared with the year 1991. It is estimated that more than 40 % of the population suffers from hypertension. It is more common as age increases.
Blood pressure is determined by the amount of blood heart pumps and the amount of resistance to blood flow in your arteries. Lots of people may not view high blood pressure as life-threatening. But uncontrolled hypertension increase risk of grave health problems.
It can affect anyone, but people who are fat, have family members who suffer from hypertension, do not exercise or who smoke are more likely to develop the problem. Eating foods high in salt too can lead to high blood pressure.
Hypertension is called "the silent killer" because it usually has no symptoms. Some people may not discover they have it until they have problem with their heart, brain, or kidneys. When it is not found and treated, it can cause:
• Heart failure.
• Kidney failure.
• Stroke,
• Blood vessels in the eyes to burst or bleed which may cause vision changes and can result in blindness.
Study shows that 18.8 % of adult Chinese have hypertension, about 160 million such patients in China. With one patient out of five Chinese adults, hypertension has turn into a most common cardiovascular disease in China.
Normal and High blood pressure
A blood pressure reading below 120/80 is considered normal and 140/90 or higher is considered high blood pressure. Both numbers are important.
Hypertension Medication
Unluckily, high blood pressure will not simply go away. Ignoring it is very dangerous. People must accept that treatment is important. Medications may include diuretics, beta-blockers (atenolol, Propranolol), calcium channel blockers, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors (Enalapril, lisinopril), angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), or alpha blockers.
It still has no cure. Once high blood pressure arises, it usually lasts a lifetime. Treatment can lower it. But discontinue treating it and it goes up again. So begin now to lower high blood pressure.
