After his Convocation address; the Chief Guest Mr N. Vittal, handed over the medals of honour for overall performances at IIPM. Mr. Naveen kumar and Dinesh K. were the recipients of Director's Gold Medal and Silver Medal respectively.Mr. Samarat Baulliah from Fall Winter batch received the Director's Silver medal.
The brilliant speech of Prof Mr. Naveen Chamoli mesmerized the audience. He handed over the academics Gold and Silver Medals. Ms. Arthi Kumar and Ms. Megha Mandani were awarded the Academic Gold and Silver from SS batch. Mr.Samarat Baulliah and Ms. Keerthi Pulagam from FW batch received Academic Gold and Silver respectively.
It was the most proud moment for the parents when all the students joined for the cap throwing ceremony after receiving their testimonials.
The students, parents and corporate guests also enjoyed the dance performance by the 8countz Dance Troop who took the stage twice to entertain the audience.
The event was hosted by the popular SS TV VJ Paloma and concluded with Vote of Thanks from Prof. Amlan Ray (Dean - Administrarion).
Father of the Green Revolution, Prof. M.S. Swaminathan graces IIPM Chennai's Convocation for the Class of PGP 2004-06 and UGP 2003-06
Noted agricultural scientist, economist and researcher, Prof. M.S. Swaminathan, acknowledged as the Father of the Green Revolution in India was the chief guest at IIPM, Chennai's Convocation for the Class of PGP 2004-06 and UGP 2003-06 conducted on 21st April, 2007.
The function began with the well-known TV host, Mr. Vijay Adiraj welcoming the guests. This was followed by the traditional lighting of the lamp. Dean Academics, Prof. R. Krishnan gave a welcome address. This was followed by an artful Bharatnatyam dance performance by Ms. Aparna Ram.
Then the august gathering was addressed by the chief guest, who is also apart from being a Member of the Rajya Sabha, the President, Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs, and Chairman, M S Swaminathan Research Foundation. Prof. Swaminathan began by saying "I am very happy to be here because I know this institution all over the country is having such a deep impact, producing men and women who can not only dream but work to convert the dream into reality..."
Prof. M. S. Swaminathan spoke about the Great Indian Dream that began with Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru's tryst with destiny that was focused on the abolition of four major components - ill-health, illiteracy, hunger and poverty - that have now become part of the UN Millennium Development Goals and is included in the global common minimum development programme for sustainable human security.
Speaking about planning and development, he began with the five year plans and the general improvement in health, literacy, poverty-reduction, employment and food self-sufficiency. Despite a percentage-wise improvement, he went on to point out how much a lot more needs to be done in absolute terms for achieving social, environmental and economic sustainability, because of our huge population. Talking about abolition of poverty, he referred to Jeffrey Sachs's 'End of Poverty', C.K.Prahlad's 'Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid', etc. He said that India should have started with reforms in the agricultural sector - establishing Special Agricultural Zones (SAZ) before going on to establishing SEZs. Lessons from China were also highlighted.
He encouraged the alumni to think of the Mother Earth every day, and to plan for the prosperity of not only oneself, but to also become transformational agents - creating a meaning in the lives of others around.
Prof. Swaminathan went on to confer the Director's Gold Medal to Vijay Gopal Singh of Spring Summer and Madhulika G. Sharda of Fall Winter batch. The Director's Silver medals were presented to A. Subramanian of Spring Summer and A. Abhishek of Fall Winter batch.
The All India Dean, Prof. A. Sandeep delivered a fantastic passionate speech reminding the IIPM alumni of their responsibilities to work dedicatedly towards National Economic Planning and Entrepreneurship. Prof. A. Sandeep conferred the Academic Gold Medal to Charanya Baker of Spring Summer and Vanathi PVK of Fall Winter batch. Ruth Babu of Spring Summer batch and Kalpana Subramanian received the Silver medal.
Corporate guests included Mr. Balaji Kumar, Head-HR of Citibank; Mr. Arvind Bishnoi, MD, Tecpro Systems; Mr. V. Ramakrishnan, Head-Chennai Operations, Motilal Oswal Securities; and Mr. Anand Choudhury, AVP, Religare.
The felicitation ceremony that followed was a spectacle to watch for the friends, family, and faculty members of the Alumni, as they went up on stage attired in their marvelous robes, stoles and caps to receive their degrees, certificates and mark sheets from Prof. M.S. Swaminathan, who did the honours with a pleasing smile on his face.
The alumni then gathered on stage for the cap-throwing ceremony that preceded the reappearance of Ms. Aparna Ram for a concluding dance recital.
Dean-Administration, Prof. Amlan Ray delivered the vote of thanks and invited everyone for the delicious dinner.
After the glittering function got over, this is what Dr. M.S. Swaminathan gave as an amazing feedback: "I congratulate you on the outstanding success of the convocation. It was a real privilege to get to know your unique institution and to listen to Prof Sandeep. The country owes a deep debt of gratitude to Dr Chaudhuri for his vision in establishing such a fine Institution."
