Ikats from South East Asia are often symbols of status, wealth, power and prestige. Perhaps because of the difficulty and time required to make ikats, some cultures believe the cloth is imbued with magical powers. Elaborate ikat patterns like those being used by Alkara, are often handed down from generation to generation in the same family.
The word "ikat" means "to bind." It is a very ancient way of creating designs in fabric by resist-dyeing the threads before the fabric is woven. Handwoven, free of the chemical additives and the stresses of power-loom production, ikats are vastly different in appearance and feel from machine-made fabrics.
