Importance of Oral Health and Its Effect on Life Expectancy

Recent studies have linked good dental health with greater longevity, and several factors play a role in their connection, including gum disease, poor dental hygiene, and tooth loss.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA, June 26, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Huntington Beach dentist, Dr. Rassouli, offers his patients personalized treatment plans to help them protect their dental health. While many studies have linked oral health with general health, recent studies have also linked good dental health with greater longevity. One cohort study focused on more than 12,000 participants who completed self-administered questionnaires about their diets, perceived oral health status, socioeconomic status and general health status. After researchers adjusted for variables, they found that those who were no longer able to eat a healthy diet due to dental issues had higher hazard ratios compared to those who were able to eat a normal diet.

Several factors may play a role in the connection between poor dental health and reduced life expectancy, including:

- Gum disease
Gingivitis and periodontitis can increase the chance of dying by 23 to 46 percent compared to healthy gums. The risk of premature death is twice as high in those under the age of 50 with advanced periodontal disease.

- Poor dental hygiene
Poor dental hygiene can be more closely linked with premature death than coronary heart disease, according to one study. Young men with poor dental hygiene and periodontal disease were three times as likely to die from coronary heart disease. 50 percent were more likely to be hospitalized.

- Tooth loss
Previous studies have linked tooth loss with premature deaths, due to cancer and cardiovascular disease. Losing a tooth can also have a significant effect on physical health, as it can increase the risk of poor nutritional status and dementia.

Huntington Beach Invisalign dentist, Dr. Rassouli, offers several treatment options for patients. The goal is to not just maintain the teeth, but to improve your overall dental health. Periodontal treatments can effectively address the underlying infection of periodontal disease. Tooth replacements, including dental implants, dental bridges and dentures, can restore full chewing ability and enable patients to eat a more balanced diet. Cosmetic treatments, such as teeth whitening and porcelain veneers, will also improve self-confidence.
