India Information Security Conference 2008 kicks off in Mumbai Howard Schmidt - Global security guru and former advisor to White House delivers keynote
Mumbai, June 24th 2008: The India Information Security Conference (Infosec) 2008, organised by 9.9 Mediaworx was inaugurated in Mumbai today with over 15 industry stalwarts from across the country shared their views on information security concerns in India.

    /24-7PressRelease/ - Mumbai, India, June 26, 2008 - The India Information Security Conference (Infosec) 2008, organised by 9.9 Mediaworx was inaugurated in Mumbai today with over 15 industry stalwarts from across the country shared their views on information security concerns in India. The first day of the annual two day event was attended by Indian as well as international delegates from across Industries, true to the conference objective - which is to address information security from a cross-functional, cross-industry strategic perspective. The keynote address at the conference was delivered by Prof. Howard A. Schmidt, Former Special Adviser for Cyberspace Security for the White House, former Vice-President and Chief Information Security Officer for eBay and former Chief Security Officer of Microsoft Corp. who brought the issue of the criticality of security for governments, businesses and consumers especially in the context of the prevailing internet driven environment to the fore. Security, it was clearly established, will be one of the critical indices for the Indian economy as it emerges as a global knowledge hub. Mahindra Special Services Group (MSSG), Microsoft and Wipro are the principal sponsors of the two day conclave.

"Information Security is a concern for governments, for corporate houses and the public at large and it is time to share best practices between government agencies, academic institutions, and major corporations so as to make ICT systems work better for all of us.", said Prof. Howard Schmidt, adding, "I believe that the systematic statutory processes in India are just right to foster a secure world of work and governance. It is the effective implementation that needs to be the focus now."

The Conference opened with an exclusive CXO Conclave on Information Security where key trends, issues and solutions were shared, discussed and debated. Participative panel discussions and relevant case studies from India and overseas were the high points of this session. The one and a half day long Knowledge Program also opened in the afternoon, for Infosec professionals and other functional managers who deal with issues in the trenches and need to sharpen their tools and knowledge to be better able to serve their organisations. An Exposition by a select group of companies with innovative offerings relevant to the Indian market and businesses was also part of the conference and was inaugurated simultaneously.

Speaking on the sidelines of the conference Mr. Pramath Raj Sinha, Managing Director, 9.9 Mediaworx Pvt. Ltd. said, "A rapidly evolving business landscape in India, accompanied by the increasing use of technology, has brought about a plethora of new security challenges that range from breaches in enterprise-level data security to issues of consumer identity privacy. The conference has very successfully addressed the urgent need to effectively preempt such security threats."

Infosec 2008 today tackled the tricky domain of Information Security challenges including, coping with a fractured defense, the strategic value of information assets, managing customers, employees and decision-makers in a virtual world, outsourcing corporate security, complexities for information security in a globalised world and complexities for information security.

The session also included an India Infosec 2008 Debate on Information Security vs. Growth - a false trade-off? Panelists debated the necessity of collaboration for business growth - with vendors, customers, competitors and a host of other stakeholders yet information security demanding an insular environment. The debate threw open discussions around the possibility of collaboration and security existing together as a win win situation for all. Among the prominent speakers at the session today were Prashun Dutta (Reliance Energy), Amit Mukherjee (RPG), Vijay Mehra (Essar), CN Ram (HDFC Bank) ,Raghu Raman (Mahindra SSG), VK Ramani (Axis Bank) and D. Sundaram (Hindustan Unilever Limited). Akhilesh Tuteja, Director KPMG, member of Data Security Council of India who is on the advisory board for Infosec 2008 stated, " I believe that this first among 9.9 Mediaworx annual conferences on Information security will help galvanize public opinion on the subject and keep it centre stage. I am delighted to be part of an endeavour to consolidate the efforts to create a common platform for addressing the security concerns within India."

Other organizations supporting the event include CERT-In (Indian Computer Emergency Response Team), SNIA (Storage Networking Industry Association), ISACA (Information Systems Audit and Control Association) and IETE (Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers).
