Indiana Breast Enlargement Patients Still Choosing Saline
Despite the variety of new implant options for breast enlargement, many women in the Hoosier State are still opting for traditional saline-filled implants. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Gus Galante explains why this choice remains so popular.

SCHERERVILLE, IN, September 10, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Newer breast implant options are getting plenty of media attention, but many women in Indiana are still opting for saline-filled implants that have been available for several decades. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Gus Galante, who recently launched a new Web site dedicated exclusively to breast enhancement in Indiana, says that for some patients the benefits of saline can be considerable.

"Saline implants have several advantages including affordability and smaller incisions, and that can be very important to some women," explains Dr. Galante. "A fair number of my patients will decide on silicone because it can feel much softer, but there are still plenty of women out there who are more comfortable with the idea of saline."

Saline implants, which are filled with a sterile saltwater solution, still account for about 60% of all breast enlargement procedures in the United States, and in Midwestern states these numbers may be even higher. Partly, Dr. Galante believes this implant type is so attractive because saline is seen as more "natural" than silicone gel, but also many women prefer these implants simply because for years they were the only option for breast augmentation in Indiana.

"Studies have demonstrated the safety of both saline and silicone implants, but for a lot of women there's still the perception that saline is the 'standard,'" he explains. "At the same time, though, it's also a question of convenience and aesthetics. Saline implants require smaller incisions, and in some cases these implants are actually more appropriate for the patient's goals."

Both saline and silicone implants have undergone rigorous safety testing before being FDA approved. Currently, silicone gel implants are only approved for first-time breast augmentation patients age 22 and up, but saline implants are available for women from the age of 18.

"In my experience, a well-trained breast enlargement surgeon in Indiana will have the skills to achieve beautiful results with either saline or silicone gel implants," notes Dr. Galante. "I assess each patient's medical history and existing breast tissue before recommending a particular implant type. Like any other cosmetic surgery, breast enlargement is most satisfying when both the surgeon and patient make wise choices for impressive results."
