    LONDON, ENGLAND, May 07, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Annual Erskine Childers Lecture 2010

"Inequality and Millenium Development Goals"

Keynote Speaker: Sir Richard Jolly

Free Public Meeting

Friends House, 173 Euston Road, London, NW1 2BJ

15th June 2010, 6:30 - 8:30 pm

Progress towards the MDGs is slipping away according to the Millennium Development Goals Report 2009. Some of the backsliding that has happened recently is:

• "In 2009, an estimated 55 million to 90 million more people will be living in extreme poverty than anticipated before the [financial] crisis;

• "The encouraging trend in the eradication of hunger since the early 1990s was reversed in 2008, largely due to higher food prices. The prevalence of hunger in the developing regions is now on the rise, from 16 percent in 2006 to 17 percent in 2008;

Extreme poverty remains a daily reality for more than 1 billion people who live on less than $1 a day. The completion of the MDGs slips away everyday as other issues, like the global financial crisis, and climate change take centre stage. Government can always find money to wage wars in different parts of the world, but not for development and poverty reduction.

Sir Richard Jolly, Former Assistant Secretary-General of the UN, Chair of UNA-UK, Special Adviser to UNDP and Deputy Director of UNICEF, will examine the above challenges and will bring forth strategies and solutions for the successful outcome of the MDGs for the benefit of the poorest of the world.
