Introducing Activities for Life: A Therapeutic Recreation Program for Families Affected By Alzheimer's and Dementia

The New York based program for seniors has revolutionized the way caregivers relate to caring for their elderly loved ones.

"We believe that recreation has the ability to "re-create" a person's life," says CEO Marni Rose.

NEW YORK, NY, May 28, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- When it comes to senior living, the best option for enjoying life in the later years is Activities for Life (AFL)- a therapeutic recreation program. Through customized and meaningful activities, AFL helps caregivers and their loved ones cope with disability and illnesses such as Alzheimer's and dementia.

Since its inception in 2008, Activities for Life has progressively changed the way caregivers relate to caring for their loved ones. Often times, there is a huge emotional and physical burden placed on caregivers as they find a way to cope. According to Family Caregivers Alliance, the psychological health of the family caregiver is negatively affected by providing care. Higher levels of stress, anxiety, depression and other mental health effects are common among family members who care for their elderly relatives.

As an answer to this growing enigma, Activities for Life, now in its 6th year has developed a series of individualized tailored programs, proven to be effective for the elderly and their caregivers as they cope with common illnesses such as, dementia, Alzheimer's, strokes and brain traumas. "We believe that recreation has the ability to "re-create" a person's life," says CEO Marni Rose. Activities for Life programs includes: Cognitive Stimulation, Creative Arts & Culture, Daily Living Skills, Music Appreciation, Oral Histories, Tactile and Sensory, and Mind & Body Strengthening. Clients, caregivers and the geriatric care community who have utilized AFL to care for their elderly family members report increased vitality, confidence, creativity, happiness, alertness and a strengthened bond in their relationships with their loved ones, were among many the benefits received.

"There was nothing worse than coming to visit my mom and seeing her blank-faced in front of the TV, zoning out to Judge Judy no less. It broke my heart week after week until I found AFL. Once an avid Pinochle and mahjong player, my mom stopped playing as her dementia slowly crept in. Plus at the age of 93, her friends were around less, and she too was less mobile. AFL found ways to bring my mom's hobbies back."- Peter, Son of Client, 2007 - 2010.
