Ione Dugger Vargus Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

Ione Vargus has been endorsed by Marquis Who's Who as a leader in the academic administration industry

AUDUBON, PA, March 19, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to name Ione Dugger Vargus a Lifetime Achiever. An accomplished listee, Ione Vargus celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

After accruing nearly 41 years of industry experience, Dr. Vargus ended a remarkable tenure with Temple University upon her retirement in 1995. She began her career in 1954 as a social worker in Chicago in the fields of family service and child welfare. In 1960 she returned to Massachusetts where she began a series of three year demonstration projects: first as a family worker for the Boston Housing Authority, then as a project director for Camp Fire Girls, and finally as a worker for the then newly established Roxbury Multi-service Center. In 1968, she began her doctoral studies and upon completion, held academic posts at Brandeis University and the University of Illinois. Until her retirement in 1995, she held the roles of associate dean, dean, professor, acting vice provost and presidential fellow at Temple University, where she was honored in 2015 for being the institution's first female academic dean and the first African-American dean, respectively.

An esteemed figure in academic administration, hard work and determination comes naturally to Dr. Vargus, as her mother raised her and her five siblings by herself following the untimely passing of her father. Ever since her upbringing, Dr. Vargus has been inspired to help alleviate poverty in her community and beyond, and has dedicated herself as a resource towards reuniting extended families through The Family Reunion Institute which she founded in 1990.

Before her professional endeavors in academia, Dr. Vargus earned a Bachelor of Arts from Tufts University and a Master of Arts in social service administration from the University of Chicago. During the course of her career, she returned to school, obtaining a Ph.D. in social policy and administration from Brandeis University. A former board member of many organizations, she proudly affiliates herself with The Association for the Study of African American Life and History, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and the National Association of Social Workers. A contributor to numerous articles in professional journals, she authored the book "Revival of Ideology: The Afro-American Society Movement," which was published in 1977 and is completing her book entitled "African American Family Reunions: More than a Picnic." In 1978, she was identified as one of 498 Hardworking Women in Pennsylvania.

Additionally, Dr. Vargus has been recognized many times for her work over the course of her exceptional career. Since 1986, she has been featured in many volumes of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the East, and was named a History Maker in the Library of Congress Program as a notable resource for the African-American community in 2006.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to her profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Ione Dugger Vargus has been featured on the Marquis Who's Who Lifetime Achievers website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
