PELLA, IA, January 24, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In January 2012, Tom Vander Well hastily tapped out a blog post on his iPad entitled "10 Ways Being a Theatre Major Prepared Me for Success" as he reflected on the ways his education as a theatre major at Judson University in Illinois had prepared him for his successful career as a business consultant. A few weeks later, Vander Well awoke to find that his post was going viral. The post quickly made its way around the theatrical communities in Chicago and on Broadway. Comments came in Hollywood, Asia, Europe, South America and Africa. Hundreds of people from the world over posted comments, many of them former theatre majors who echoed Vander Well's experience.
After two years and nearly a quarter million hits, Vander Well has found himself the unlikely patron saint of theatre majors and theatre educators around the globe. Google "Theater Major" and you'll find the post at the top of the search engine's list. The post has been reprinted in papers and journals. Educators hand it out to students and parents. One educator turned the post into a lecture for a Master's class and uploaded it on YouTube. Many colleges have put the post on their websites. The post has found its way into the spotlight for an unending series of curtain calls.
Vander Well continues to be surprised by his post's popularity and influence. He is contacted regularly by young people seeking advice on their college careers and by anxious parents seeking reassurance of their college bound children's decision to pursue theatre as a major. Vander Well, says the post has even opened a few doors for his continued pursuit of the stage as an amateur. He has been cast in a starring role of a college production of O'Neil's "Ah, Wilderness!" The Missouri Playwright's Workshop at the University of Missouri invited Vander Well to present an original script he penned, which is now scheduled to be produced for the first time in April 2014.
Tom Vander Well is a private blogger living in Pella, Iowa.
