/24-7PressRelease/ - INDIANAPOLIS, IN, July 09, 2008 — When a corporation senses it's losing vital information but cannot understand how, the real surprise comes when a cell-phone listening device is discovered built into an ordinary lamp. Or power strip. Or fax machine. Or...in one of over forty potential appliances now being used as illegal listening devices. These illegal devices can be ordered from many foreign websites by paying with a credit card and are shipped to the U.S. without Customs knowledge. One Indianapolis investigator is leading the sneaky charge against illegal eavesdropping in business and industry.

"Corporate espionage and illegal surveillance has gone high tech in the most common appliances," said Tim Wilcox, President of Indianapolis-based International Investigators, Inc. "Lamps, power strips, USB hubs, fax machines and of course, cellphones themselves—there's no telling how bad guys might be listening in these days unless you sweep using TSCM."

TSCM is the investigative acronym for technical surveillance countermeasures—a highly technical, specialized industry dedicated to discovering the presence of illegal listening devices, offering legal surveillance of both physical subjects and sensitive electronic information, and even passively or actively tracking vehicles, people or packages using high tech gear.

"If you really suspect you're being listened in on, then no bones about it, you need a bug sweep," Wilcox added. "But a sweep—a device detection—that uses real professionals with documented expertise and the latest bug-detection equipment. Illegal listening devices are no joke—and most cannot be detected by the so-called 'over-the-counter' device detectors."

The Indianapolis investigator described bug detection as a true specialized science as well as an intuitive, experienced-based form of investigation. "So many people are surprised to discover a cellphone hidden in a boardroom that belongs to no one—a phone that is actually tuned in on their private conversations," Wilcox added. "The bad guys are smart. The people fighting them need to be smarter."
