/24-7PressRelease/ - June 08, 2006 - Are companies prepared for disasters? There are presently no international standards for emergency preparedness, a problem that ISO intends to remedy. Several months ago ISO issued a request to the International Center for Enterprise Preparedness (InterCEP) at New York University to host a multi-national workgroup to present recommendations that would outline emergency preparedness standards for organizations. Approximately 60 Representatives from around the world attended this three-day conference and have passed their report on to ISO at their meeting in Stockholm, Sweden last month. Various aspects of emergency preparedness were covered including the importance of the Human Impact of disaster and crisis.
"All too often, the human aspect is noticeably missing from a company's emergency preparedness plan. We saw this play out in New Orleans following Katrina" says Jeffrey Weir, senior partner at Organizational Resilience International. "Companies that paid attention to their Human Impact needs were up and productive faster than those that continued to try to put out fires as they came up. A Human Impact Preparedness Program is an integrated part of a company's overall crisis prepredness program. It is a comprehensive approach to ensuring your people are present and productive before, during and after the event of a major crisis. After all, if you IT processes and business recovery sites are up and running but there's no one there to operate them, how successful would you consider your BCP?".
Human Impact Preparedness Planning addresses a wide range of personnel needs including Emergency Assistance, Psychological Support, Family Readiness, Organizational Resilience and Other Stakeholders.
ISO intends to publish its standards on emergency preparedness sometime in the next year.
