SLOUGH, ENGLAND, April 03, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- When it comes to IT jobs, there are two basic types: permanent jobs or contractor jobs. Both types of IT job have their positive and negative sides, and each requires IT professionals to have a slightly different skillset and even mindset.

Deciding whether you want to work on a contractual or permanent basis can have a huge impact on your level of job satisfaction in the future. You need to consider very carefully the pros and cons associated with each type of work and choose the IT job that suits you best.

Permanent IT jobs have an element of security that is hard to match as a contractor. Staff in permanent IT jobs tend to pick up a broad range of skills through their work, and develop a clear picture of the information infrastructure and processes of the company they work for.

On the other hand, they tend to get paid less than their contractor counterparts. There also tends to be less variety in the work itself - there is seldom the excitement of working on a new project from scratch, and much of the work centres around day-to-day system maintenance.

IT professionals who focus on contracted IT jobs usually have a smaller range of skills to draw upon, but are expected to be true experts in these disciplines. As a contractor, you will have the opportunity to work with a large number of companies on a variety of new and challenging projects.

Although contractors on IT jobs can expect to be better paid than permanent staff, there is no guarantee of winning new contracts, so a degree of financial uncertainty goes with the role.

Searching for IT Jobs
If you do go down the contractor route, you will have to get used to selling yourself and your skills time and time again to potential employers.

Finding contractor jobs will not be too difficult - specialist job sites like TheITJob are an excellent way to track down new IT jobs - but you must be able to pitch effectively for new positions when they arise.

Sites like TheITJob are also immensely useful for permanent workers, as they provide a quick and easy overview of the industry as a whole and the kind of skills that employers are currently looking for in the IT jobs they are advertising.

Even if you are in permanent employment, it can't hurt to keep your ear to the ground and remain aware of possible new employment opportunities.

Ultimately, the choice of whether to take permanent or contractor IT jobs depends entirely on the individual and what they want from their career. Both roles have their pros and cons, and each requires IT workers to have very different skills and abilities to make a success of them.
