Cohen maintains that most people shape their own destiny and ultimately determine whether or not fear will control their lives. When fear exerts its grip, people find it difficult to distinguish between past pain and present reality. The Secret begins with learning how to control one's thoughts. Thoughts control feelings, and feelings control the nature of the energy people project into their personal relationships.
Cohen says that the secret to The Secret is to create a vision, develop a plan, and adopt a positive belief in oneself and the future. The Secret is about taking action, accepting absolute personal responsibility, and committing to the steps required to turn a dream into a reality. Cohen states, "Without a future vision, a well defined plan, and living each day with intention, one's dreams will always remain an unattainable illusion."
