J. Martinez Discusses the Drinking Age of Coffee

Parents everywhere want to know: when can children drink coffee? J. Martinez & Company answers.

NORCROSS, GA, July 17, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- There is no denying it: coffee culture is on the rise. This is quite concerning for many parents, whose children are expressing an interest in drinking a cup of morning Joe right alongside mom and dad. At what age, they wonder, is it OK for me to allow my child to drink coffee? J. Martinez & Company, a purveyor of gourmet coffees, believes this is a complex issue whose answer relies more on the parents' feelings towards coffee and caffeine than on anything else.

Scientifically speaking, caffeine exposure has not been proven to have any negative effects on a child's development, and caffeine consumption often occurs at very early ages when children drink sodas or eat chocolate. That does not mean that consuming caffeine does not have side effects for children. Children who consume caffeine in any form can experience many of the same side effects adults do, including hyperactivity, insomnia, nervousness, irritability, headaches, anxiety, nausea, muscular tremors, and even irregular heartbeats. These side effects are not to be taken lightly, and they are of concern to many parents.

Side effects are of little concern to kids, though. Teens are especially interested in consuming coffee specialty drinks as a social event, but even young children may show interest if they see their parents drinking coffee every morning. J. Martinez & Company believes there is no right or wrong age to allow children to try gourmet specialty coffee, but the company does encourage parents to consider introducing children to decaffeinated coffee instead of regular.
