Jackson Cosmetic Dentist Offers Veneers For Smile Makeovers

Dr. Constance Smith improves the appearance of patients' smiles with veneers in Jackson.

JACKSON, MI, August 22, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- With advancements in dentistry, patients no longer need to deal with gaps in their teeth or teeth that are stained, badly shaped or crooked. Dr. Constance Smith, a Jackson cosmetic dentist, works with her patients to create dazzling smiles. By placing a dental veneer on top of a patient's front teeth, it can correct natural blemishes or injuries to help patients achieve a beautiful smile again.

Recently, dental veneers in Jackson have grown increasingly popular because of their instant, sparkling visual appeal. Cosmetic dentists frequently perform this process as more patients are finding that a vibrant, stunning smile is within reach. Dental veneers are custom-designed shells of tooth-like ceramic material that, when applied over the surface of a tooth, can cover worn tooth enamel, uneven tooth alignment or spacing, and chips or cracks.

"I want my patients to be proud of their smiles, which may be difficult when they have dental blemishes. With veneers, I can offer an alternative to whitening that provides superior results that last. I encourage each of my patients to visit my office to see if they are candidates for dental veneers," said Dr. Constance Smith, a cosmetic and family dentist in Jackson.

Two of the most commonly used materials in the manufacture of dental veneers are composite resin and porcelain veneers. A dental technician in a dental laboratory can fabricate both porcelain veneers and composite veneers. Composite veneers, on the other hand, can also be directly fabricated inside a patient's mouth at this dentist in Jackson's office. Of the two options, porcelain veneers are longer lasting and resemble your natural teeth more closely.

Composite veneers are made from a special bonding material and require the artistic skill of Dr. Smith to shape and mold the composite resin to the desired shape of the tooth. Once this has been done, a special light is used to cure or set the resin. Composite bonding is a much quicker alternative to porcelain veneers, but they do not last as long and are more susceptible to staining from foods and drinks.

Getting dental veneers requires multiple visits to make and apply the veneers. One tooth or many teeth can simultaneously undergo the veneering process. During the tooth preparation visit with Dr. Constance Smith, a Jackson family dentist, the teeth are lightly buffed to allow for the small-added thickness of the veneer. Usually, about a half a millimeter of the tooth is removed, which may require a local anesthetic. At this visit, a mold is taken of the patient's teeth and sent to the laboratory for fabrication of a patient in Jackson's veneers.

The final visit is when the veneers are bonded to the tooth surface with water or glycerin to check their fit and get a sense of the shade or color needed. While the veneers are resting on the teeth, they can be adjusted with various shades of bonding materials to match the color of a patient's teeth. To apply, the tooth is cleansed with specific chemicals to achieve a bond. Once the special cement is placed between the veneer and tooth, a visible light beam, or laser, causes a catalyst to be released, hardening the cement.

"It is not uncommon to see slight variations in the color of porcelain veneers upon close inspection, as this occurs even in your natural teeth. If you have undesirable defects, contact my office for further consultation on if veneers would work for your smile restoration," said Dr. Constance Smith, a Jackson cosmetic dentist.
