NEW YORK, NY, October 19, 2008 /24-7PressRelease/ -- On Wednesday, October 22, at 8:30 p.m., the New York-based James Carney Quartet will be performing at REDCAT, inside the Roy O. Disney CalArts Theater, located in downtown Los Angeles.

A pianist, keyboardist and composer, James Carney draws inspiration from many different sources of music and influences. Featuring songs from the 2007, fourth album release, "Green-wood," and longtime collaborators Tony Malaby (saxophone), Chris Lightcap (bass) and Dan Weiss (drums), the quartet produces an innovative and refreshing set of pieces. In addition, Carney will debut new work featured on the upcoming album "Ways and Means" due in stores spring 2009.

Recently, Carney has been commissioned by the Chamber Music America/Doris Duke Jazz Ensembles New Works: Creation Program (2007), The California Arts Council, The Extension Ensemble brass quintet and the Syracuse International Film Festival. In 1999, Carney won the Thelonious Monk International Composers Award and two American Composers Forum Subito Grants (2001, 2004). He received the "best jazz artist" award at the 2002 LA Weekly Music Awards and participated in the California Arts Council Touring Program from 1998-2004.

At age fifteen Carney began focusing on the piano and graduated from the California Institute of the Arts in 1990 with a B.F.A. degree in jazz piano performance. Carney had the privilege of working with unique artists including Ravi Coltrane, Ralph Alessi and Christian McBride; The James Carney Group has participated on projects featuring Tim Berne, Kris Davis and Tom Rainey.

Originally from Syracuse, New York, Carney relocated from Los Angeles, his home of 18 years, to New York City in 2004. Carney's new album "Ways and Means" will be released in spring 2009.
