James D. Hurd Distinguished for Professional Contributions to Computer Science

A pioneer of the computer age, James D. Hurd worked on UNIVAC I, the first commercial computer procured for the federal government



    STONE MOUNTAIN, GA, March 17, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ --James D. Hurd, Chief of the Technology Support Division of the U.S. Army Concepts Analysis Agency, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in computer science.

Drawing on 37 years of expertise in the field of computer science, James D. Hurd is recognized as an expert in programming, mathematics, IT functions and operations management. A retiree of the U.S. Army Concepts Analysis Agency, he gained extensive experience working on UNIVAC I, the first commercial computer procured for the federal government. He managed an assorted mix of military and civilian analysts and computer science personnel in developing computer models and programs for use in studying air and army warfare, and conducted special studies for the Department of Defense. Recognized among the pioneers of the computer age, Mr. Hurd was honored with a special token of appreciation by former President Ronald Reagan in 1981.

An attendee of American University, Mr. Hurd completed coursework in mathematics and computer science. He holds a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Lincoln Memorial University and is a certified mathematics and science teacher in the State of Tennessee. Mr. Hurd is a former affiliate of the Association for Computing Machinery and Toastmasters International. Since his retirement in 1985, he has been actively involved with his church and local community. He enjoys teaching tennis and maintains extensive involvement with his local food pantry and the Meals on Wheels Association of America.
