James E. Cavanagh Jr. Recognized for Excellence in Surgical Medicine

Dr. Cavanagh draws upon 60 years of experience in his role as an educator



Dr. Cavanagh has worked with the Florida State University College of Medicine Department of Biomedical Sciences as a clinical associate professor and faculty member since 2001.

    TALLAHASSEE, FL, February 15, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- James E. Cavanagh Jr., MD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

With more than 60 years of professional experience, Dr. Cavanagh has worked with the Florida State University College of Medicine Department of Biomedical Sciences as a clinical associate professor and faculty member since 2001. He is a full time volunteer and teaches Anatomy to the first and second year medical students. Prior to obtaining his current role, he had a general surgical practice with Tallahassee Memorial Hospital from 1976 to 1997, and with Portsmouth Hospital, C-HCA, Inc., from 1962 to 1976.

After earning a Bachelor's Degree at Dartmouth College in 1951 Dr. Cavanagh attended the Dartmouth College Geisel School of Medicine which then was a 2 year school. He received a degree and at present is secretary of his class. He went on to study at Harvard University Medical School, earning an MD there in 1954. He then trained at Boston City Hospital as a surgical intern and resident from 1954 to 1957. From 1957 to 1959, he served as a member of the Department of Surgery for the U.S. Navy at Charleston Naval Hospital, attaining the rank of lieutenant during his service. He then returned to the Dartmouth College Geisel School of Medicine to serve as a surgical resident and chief surgical resident with Dartmouth Affiliated Hospitals from 1959 to 1961. He is certified as a diplomate of the American College of Surgeons and the American Board of Surgery.

A respected voice in the field of medical education, Dr. Cavanagh has contributed articles to professional journals pertaining to his areas of expertise. In addition, he is a member of the admissions committee with the Florida State University College of Medicine, and he maintains involvement with the New England Surgical Society, where he has been recognized as a senior member since 1975. He previously served as a member of the Water Resources Committee with Leon County for 16 years.

In recognition of his contributions to the field of medicine, Dr. Cavanagh has been included in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the World. He was previously selected to receive the Eagle Scout Award through the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America in 1947.
