James Edward Russell, PhD Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

    CINCINNATI, OH, August 28, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to name James Edward Russell, PhD a Lifetime Achiever. As an emeritus professor of physics at the University of Cincinatti since 2010, Dr. Russell has taught and studied physics in the U.S. and abroad, contributing numerous scientific papers to professional journals. He has dedicated 53 years of research to the study of exotic atoms, and is known for his work involving protonium, the bound state of a proton and an antiproton.

Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, in 1931, Dr. Russell attended Yale University and earned a bachelor's degree as well as a master's degree. He joined the University of Virginia as a postdoctorate fellow in 1957, going on to research at Indiana University after completing a PhD at Yale in 1958. Two years later, Dr. Russell was a research physicist at Carnegie Mellon University, and went on to teach as a visiting assistant professor at the University of Padua in Italy.
In 1963, Dr. Russell was in Oxford, England as a departmental senior research officer, and in 1965, he worked at the University of Cincinnati as an associate professor. He was appointed full professor of physics in 1974, and in 2010, he became a professor emeritus. He was married in 1977 to Mary Carol Schalk.

Dr. Russell's work with protonium using the Born-Oppenheimer approximation is well known. These atoms are generated by particle collisions, and work on protonium continues at laboratories such as CERN. For his work in this area of physics, Dr. Russell was selected for inclusion in seven volumes of Who's Who in America from 2010 to 2016.
