/24-7PressRelease/ - Washington, DC, August 15, 2008, James T. Cooney, Special Education Teacher for the Alexandria City Public School System, has been recognized byCambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in all aspects of special education.
With more than 20 years of professional experience, Mr. Cooney specializes in teaching special education to students with emotional disorders, learning disabilities and mental retardation. He is responsible for teaching reading and mathematics to seventh-grade students and working as an assigned team leader for a seventh grade team of general and special education teachers. Prior to attaining his current position, Mr. Cooney worked as a computer lab instructional coordinator for three years, a special education resource teacher for six years, a special education teacher and educational coordinator at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC for five years and an educational instructor for children at Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children for five years.
A nominee for the Harry Burke Award for Outstanding Achievement in Special Education, Mr. Cooney attributes his success to the support he receives from his mentors and peers. He stays current with the trends in his profession by attending workshops and reading industry-related publications and feels that keeping students motivated in school is the most important issue facing his profession today.
Mr. Cooney received his Master of Educational Technology from Gallaudet University and serves as a team leader of the Literacy Leadership Committee. He intends to become a peer coach for other teachers and continue to work with students with special needs in the future.
