Jerzy Bernholc, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Drexel professor of physics and former director of the center for high performance simulation at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, Dr. Bernholc began teaching at the university in 1986. Currently, his research focuses on nanoscale science and technology, nano and molecular electronics, energy storage mechanisms, the role of transition metals in human metabolism and diseases, and algorithms and methodology of high-performance scalable parallel computing. Dr. Bernholc was also the co-director of the Institute for Computational Science and Engineering for five years.

Contributing more than 260 papers and 230 invited talks at conferences in his field, Dr. Bernholc has also spoken at more than 80 seminars and colloquia at universities and research centers and has co-chaired or co-organized over 50 conferences and workshops. Furthermore, he has co-authored three books and spent 10 years as a specialist editor of materials science for Computer Physics Communications. Illustrations from his work have appeared on the covers of several popular publications, including Science, Physics Today, Science News, and Science and Engineering Indicators.

A fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Materials Research Society, and the American Physical Society, where he served as chair of the division of computational physics and in numerous other capacities, Dr. Bernholc is currently a member of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Science advisory board. Furthermore, he serves as their chair of the scientific advisory committee its computing and computational sciences directorate since 2010.

Dr. Bernholc holds a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Mathematics and a PhD in Physics, both from the University of Lund in Sweden. After completing his PhD in 1978, he went on to become a postdoctoral researcher for IBM Watson Research Center in New York where he received an Outstanding Innovation Award in 1979 before becoming a senior physicist at Corporate Research Laboratories for Exxon Research and Engineering Company from 1980 to 1986.

The recipient of an Alumni Outstanding Research Award by North Carolina State University in 1992, Dr. Bernholc later received a Creativity Extension Award by the National Science Foundation in 1996. He has been highlighted in more than 35 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World. Born in Szczecin, Poland, Dr. Bernholc later married Alissa Seligman in 1982, with whom he has had two children.
