Jiann Hong Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

With more than 25 years of professional experience in the field of academia, Dr. Hong has been an acclaimed professor in the Department of Biotechnology and Bioindustry Sciences at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) since 2013. In this position, his research interests include mitochondria and cell death, molecular virology, and oxidative stress biology. Prior to his current appointment, Dr. Hong worked as an associate professor at NCKU from 2009 to 2013, and an assistant professor from 2003 to 2009.

In preparation for his career, Dr. Hong obtained a Bachelor of Science in 1986 and a Master of Science in 1991 from National Chung Cheng University. He then served as a research assistant at the Institute of Zoology at the Institute of Molecular Biology from 1991 to 1994. In 1999, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in life science from the National Defense University. Thereafter, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Institute of Zoology at the Institute of Molecular Biology from 1999 to 2002.

As an expert in the field, Dr. Hong maintains affiliation with several professional networks, including the American Chemical Society, the Taiwan Marine Biotechnology Society, the European Cell Death Organization, and the Chinese Society for Microbiology. In addition, he is a member of the Taiwan Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, as well as the Taiwan branch of the Asian Fisheries Society.

A respected voice in life sciences and biochemistry, Dr. Hong has been the author and coauthor of several articles in professional journals. Most recently, he was the coauthor of "Anti-apoptotic genes Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL overexpression can block iridovirus serine/threonine kinase-induced Bax/mitochondria-mediated cell death in GF-1 cells" in Fish and Shellfish Immunology in 2017, Betanodavirus B2 triggers apoptosis and necroptosis in lung cancer cells that suppresses autophagy, in Oncotarget in 2017, and Nuclear targeting of the betanodavirus B1 protein via two arginine-rich domains induces G1/S cell cycle arrest mediated by upregulation of p53/p21 in Scientific Reports in 2018.

In recognition of his achievements, Dr. Hong has been honored with numerous accolades throughout his career. The recipient of the International Einstein Award in 2012, he was also honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Biographical Centre that same year. In addition, Dr. Hong was named Man of the Year for Taiwan from the American Biographical Institute for 2010-2011, an honoree at the United Cultural Convention in 2010, and a grantee of the National Science Council of the Ministry of Science and Technology from 2002 to 2006.

Married to Jing-Yun Lee with whom he has three children, Dr. Hong has been listed in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in Asia, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the World. Looking toward the future, Dr. Hong aspires to continue making strides as a professor at NCKU and influencing the ambitions of his students.
