JK Harris Advises Taxpayers Looking for Refund to Tell IRS of Address Changes
JK Harris and Company strongly advises taxpayers who have recently moved to tell the IRS or they may not receive their due refund and/or stimulus checks.

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC, November 20, 2008 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The IRS has $266 million dollars looking for a home. That is why Peter Hukki of JK Harris and Company advises taxpayers who have moved since filing their 2007 tax return to let the IRS know.

"If this money remains unclaimed, it will stay with the government," said Hukki, an Enrolled Agent with the nation's largest tax representation firm.

According to the IRS, there are 279,000 economic stimulus checks totaling about $163 million and more than 104,000 refund checks worth approximately $103 million that have been returned by the U.S. Postal Service because of mailing address errors.

And the IRS has set a Nov. 28, 2008 deadline for taxpayers who may be due a stimulus check to update their addresses because, by law, the stimulus checks must be sent out by Dec. 31.

Regular refund checks that were returned to the IRS, will be resent as soon as the IRS has received an address update. Taxpayers who are due a refund check can update their addresses using the "Where's My Refund?" option on the IRS website, http://www.irs.gov, or by calling 1-800-829-1954.

For anyone who has moved recently or is planning on moving in the future, Form 8822 can be filled out and sent to the IRS as notification. The form can be downloaded on the IRS website, http://www.irs.gov, or a copy of the form can be requested by calling 1-800-TAX-FORM (1-800-829-3676).

If no tax return for 2007 has been filed as of yet, there is still time for that, as well. A taxpayer has three years to file a return and still receive any refund due. To receive this refund for tax year 2007, the return will need to be filed by April 15, 2011.

The same will hold true for the stimulus checks.

"Since this stimulus refund is an advance on your 2008 return, if no return is filed within three years of the due date (April 15, 2012), it will be treated as any other refund not claimed by an individual and will stay with the government," said Hukki.
