/24-7PressRelease/ - NORTH CHARLESTON,SC, September 16, 2007 - Peter Hukki, Enrolled Agent for JK Harris and Company, LLC, attended the ninth annual conference on Advanced Taxpayer Representation and IRS Procedure conducted by the American Academy of Tax Practice. The three-day event was held Sept. 5-7 in Las Vegas, NV.
The forum is an advanced program that covered topics in Examination, Collections, Appeals, Criminal Employment Taxes, and Penalty Administration. Also covered were topics relating to Tax Practice, the IRS, Filing Requirements, and Administrative Practice. Hukki was joined at the conference by other authorized tax practitioners including Enrolled Agents, Attorneys, and CPAs from around the country for an in-depth look at the advanced aspects of representing clients before the IRS.
"This year's focus was on the 'tax gap'," said Hukki. "In the area of examinations, the IRS is now looking more and more towards the underreporting and non-reporting of income than at deduction of expenses when it comes to businesses. It is this lack of reporting on income that is said to be the cause of the tax gap."
Hukki has been an EA since 1974. He is a member of the National Association of Enrolled Agents, having served as a Director and Treasurer on the National Board. He is currently a member of the South Carolina Society of Enrolled Agents and is a member of the National Association of Tax Practitioners. Hukki's area of concentration at JK Harris, the nation's largest tax resolution firm, is audit representation and the preparation of complex tax returns.
"One of the best things about the conference is the detailed coverage of each topic," said Hukki. "For each topic, case studies and/or court cases are presented and the participants have to figure out what the outcome or ruling was in each case. This analysis is greatly beneficial, as Congress has recently changed (tax) preparer penalties. The more we learn, the better we insure ourselves against incurring these types of penalties."
