Joanne Johnson Troutner Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

Ms. Troutner wants to be remembered as someone who facilitates learning.

Born to Donal Russel and Lois Vivian Johnson in Muncie, Indiana, Ms. Troutner was interested in library science as a way to broaden her view of the world. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Media and English from Purdue University in 1974, going on to marry Lary William Troutner one year later. Ms. Troutner continued her education in Purdue with a Master of Science in 1976, and joined Lafayette School Corporation in Indiana as a media specialist. During that period Ms. Troutner taught English for one year at Minot Public Schools in North Dakota, and served as a media specialist for another year.

In 1983, she became a computer resource teacher at Lafayette School Corporation before moving on to a role with the Tippecanoe School Corporation in 1984, becoming director of technology and media in 1994. All told, Ms. Troutner served Tippecanoe from 1984 to 2007. As director, she was able to build an integrated curriculum system from the ground up, a fact of which Ms. Troutner is very proud.

As a dedicated educator with computer acumen, Ms. Troutner has authored numerous books, including "Project Based Learning with Technology" released in 2015, and a series of reference books titled "Best of the Best Websites." She has written seven editions of "The Internet: A Curriculum Oriented Guide" and serves as a materials review columnist for Media Quarterly, as well as a computer literacy columnist for the Journal of Computers, Math and Scientific Teaching. Prior to those publications, Ms. Troutner has served as a software columnist for Teacher Library as well as an internet columnist and editor for the Indiana Computer Educators Newsletter from Best Web Resources. She belongs to the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the American Library Association, the International Society of Technology Educatiors, the Indiana Computer Educators, the International Council for Computers in Education, the American Association of School Libraries, and the Indiana Association of Media Educators.

Ms. Troutner was acknowledged with membership in the honor societies Phi Beta Kappa, Kappa Delta Gamma, and Phi Delta Kappa, where she has served in a number of leadership positions. She was presented a 2003 Distinguished Alumni Award from the Purdue University School of Education, and was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American education, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who of American Women, and the 1987 to 1988 volume of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.

Ms. Troutner's husband succumbed to Amytrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) in May of 2011, and she has since devoted her charitable efforts toward supporting the medical community and patient families in the treatment of ALS. Additionally, she has supported civic groups in the Lafayette community, notably the Lafayette Family Service Agency and the Lafayette Adult Reading Academy. She is a current member of the dean's advisory council in Purdue University.
