CABOOLTURE, AUSTRALIA, January 26, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- John B. Campbell, D.Phil. (Oxon), F.S.A. (Scot.), Adjunct Associate Professor of Anthropology, Archaeology and Sociology for James Cook University, has been named a Worldwide Branding Professional of the Year in Higher Education. While inclusion in Worldwide Branding is an honor, only a small selection of members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, years of service, and the credentials they have provided in association with their Worldwide Branding membership.

Dr. Campbell has 48 years of professional experience, with five years of experience as an adjunct associate professor of James Cook University. On a daily basis, he is responsible for conducting research and Ph.D. supervision in archaeology, as well as providing forensic advice to police services and investigation authorities as needed.

Dr. Campbell is working on two new books, one for Oxford University Press (Surviving the Last Glacial: Climate Change and Extinctions), and the other for Thames and Hudson (Australia BCE: Before the Colonial Era). The latter is being co-authored with an Australian Aboriginal archaeologist and elder (Galeena Ellwood). Dr Campbell has already published three other books and more than 50 papers (journal articles and chapters in books). He has also presented more than 100 seminars and colloquia. At the beginning of 2010, Dr. Campbell retired from full-time university teaching, but was then hired on a casual basis to do all of the teaching in archaeology at Cairns in 2010. He is now supervising some of remaining Ph.D. students to completion, but is no longer teaching undergraduates. Although he has enjoyed it and has been very pleased to see some of his former students develop very interesting careers of their own, after 40 years of teaching, Dr. Campbell's time is now focused fully on research and writing. He is a scientific archaeologist with a strong commitment to supporting Australian Aboriginal control of Aboriginal heritage, land and sea rights, and with an equally strong commitment to developing the archaeology of outer space, as incongruous as these two might seem.

Looking back, Dr. Campbell attributes his success to his passion, perseverance and the excitement of discovering new things. He became involved in his profession because he had interests in both archaeology and astronomy since childhood. His curiosity in new discoveries has led him on a successful path in his career.

Dr. Campbell received a Ph.D. in Archaeology from the University of Oxford, England in 1972, a graduate diploma in prehistoric archaeology, archaeology and human evolution from the University of Oxford, England in 1966 and a bachelor's degree in anthropology and liberal arts from Park University, Missouri in 1965. In addition to his degrees, he has earned a Professional Diver Certification (Australian Standard, Level 1). He is the president of the Australian Rock Art Research Association and a member of the Australian Archaeological Association, the International Council on Monuments and Sites, the National Space Society of Australia, The Planetary Society and the World Archaeological Congress. In years to come, he will continue the research and involvement in astrobiology and the search for the origins of life. He also intends to be part of the international effort to preserve various world archaeological monuments.
