Dr. Cowan is renowned for his academic research in the origin of the elements in the universe. He currently holds the title of David Ross Boyd Professor Emeritus at the University of Oklahoma, having served in the position for more than a decade. Prior to his retirement, the university awarded him the highest honor for undergraduate teaching, The General Education Teaching Award. He also applied his expertise in astronomy and physics as a research fellow at the university for almost 10 years. Dr. Cowan began his career in the field as an assistant professor at the University of Oklahoma in 1979. The school offered him the position of associate professor in 1984, and S.R. Noble Presidential Professor in 1998, a position he went on to hold until 2002. The University of Oklahoma also commended his outstanding professorship with the Kinney-Sugg Outstanding Professor Award in 2004. Dr. Cowan also held various other academic roles throughout his career; he served as a visiting professor at Columbia University, as a visiting research associate at Harvard University, and as a member of the visitors committee at the National Science Foundation. For an extensive amount of time, he has also acted as a member of the review panel at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration from.

Dr. Cowan graduated with a PhD from the University of Maryland in 1976. He also holds a Master of Science from the Case Institute of Technology and a Bachelor of Arts from George Washington University. He continued his education as a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University in 1976, serving in this position for three years. He has authored numerous articles published in professional journals, and his research led to the co-discovery of gold in one of the oldest stars in the universe. In Dornstadt, Germany, a symposium was held on one of the oldest stars in the universe, focusing on his research on the subject. Recognized for his outstanding research in the field, the National Science Foundation honored him as a grantee from 1997 to 2011. He is a member of the American Astronomical Society and Phi Beta Kappa.

In 1957, when Dr. Cowan was still a child, he witnessed Sputnik traveling overhead. The sight left him with a deep interest in pursuing the study of astronomy. Dr. Cowan has been married to Linda Elaine Demetry for more than 45 years. In his spare time, he enjoys playing racquetball and keeping up with physical fitness.
