SAN RAFAEL, CA, December 08, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present John Hart with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Mr. Hart celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Born and raised in California, Mr. Hart learned the writer's craft in large part from his parents. His father, Lawrence Hart, was an eminent critic and mentor of poets, while his mother, Jeanne McGahey, was herself a well-regarded poet. Going on to attend Princeton University in New Jersey, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Comparative Literature in 1970 before leaving the academic track to become a freelance writer.

Dividing his attention between literature and the environmental field, Mr. Hart has written 16 books and hundreds of other published works. Recognitions include the James D. Phelan Award by the San Francisco Foundation in 1970, the David R. Brower Award for Service in the Field of Conservation by the American Alpine Club in 1992, Silver Medals in the Commonwealth Club Book Awards in 1992 and 1997, and the Bay Institute's Carla Bard Bay Educational Award in 2003.

Mr. Hart's first verse volume, The Climbers, appeared in the prestigious Pitt Poetry Series in 1978, and the sequel Storm Camp was published by Sugartown Publishing in 2017. He works with poets in the Lawrence Hart Seminars, pursuing a tradition dating to the 1930s, and edits the all-poetry "little" magazine Blue Unicorn, continuous since 1977.

Prose titles include three with University of California Press: Farming on the Edge: Saving Family Farms in Marin County, California (1991); Storm Over Mono: The Mono Lake Battle and the California Water Future (1996); and San Francisco Bay: Portrait of an Estuary (2003). An avid backpacker, mountaineer, and climber, Mr. Hart authored Walking Softly in the Wilderness: The Sierra Club Guide to Backpacking, now in its fourth edition and acknowledged as a "Work of Significance" in the National Outdoor Book Awards (1999).

Mr. Hart is a regular contributor to Bay Nature and High Country News. His translations from French and German include the book Landscapes of the Chinese Soul: The Enduring Presence of the Cultural Revolution, published in 2014 by Karnac in London. He has been contracted as a communications consultant for organizations including Adobe Systems, the American Farmland Trust, and the California Resources Agency.

He is a member of the Authors Guild, the Association of Literary Scholars, Critics, and Writers, and the American Alpine Club, where he served as co-chair on the conservation committee.
