A respected authority in the field of marine science, Mr. Parks serves as the owner of Marine Management Solutions LLC. Founded in 2010, the environmental services company provides international clients with specialized natural resource management and policy solutions, particularly relating to fisheries management, marine conservation, and climate change adaptation. For 25 years, Mr. Parks has worked with local communities, indigenous leaders, resource users, government agencies and non-governmental organizations to design and implement marine resource management solutions that strengthen the environmental and civil security in coastal communities around the world. He maintains involvement with a wide range of industry-related organizations, including the Chamber of Commerce Hawaii, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Society for Conservation Biology, Pacific Science Association and IUCN's World Commission on Protected Areas.
Prior to pursuing a career in environmental science, Mr. Parks received a Bachelor's degree in Behavioral Science and Marine Biology from the University of Miami in 1992. He went on to complete a Master's degree in Marine Affairs and Policy through the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science at the University of Miami in 1995. Mr. Parks holds a number of health and safety certifications through the American Red Cross, including in wilderness and remote first aid, water safety and lifeguarding, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of automated external defibrillators, and adult first aid. He is also a certified open water SCUBA diver, which he has used throughout his career to conduct scientific research and underwater archaeology.
While completing his formal education, Mr. Parks served as a project assistant with the World Wide Fund for Nature in the Western Province of the Solomon Islands. Following completion of his graduate studies, he then joined the World Wildlife Fund as a program officer working in the Indo-Pacific. From 1999 to 2004, Mr. Parks worked as a research associate with the World Resources Institute. He also served as a federal officer with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration from 2004 to 2008. Since 2010, Mr. Parks has served as the owner and executive member of Marine Management Solutions LLC. He recently founded Exoscientific LLC, a company focused on building humanity's capacity to thrive in challenging and hostile offworld environments, including Mars.
Throughout the course of his career, Mr. Parks has been regularly recognized for his contributions to marine science. He frequently publishes original research in the scientific literature, most recently within Marine Policy, a leading journal relating to ocean policy and management. Previously, Mr. Parks was an invited expeditionary member of the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument Holo i Moana Research Cruise with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
