John Patrick Ferguson Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

Mr. Ferguson has dedicated 45 years to hospital administration in New York and New Jersey, and is well known for transforming Hackensack University Medical Center from a community hospital to one of the largest medical facilities in the area. He was the president and chief executive officer of Blue Horizon Stem Cells in New York, NY, a research center that has provided thousands of non-embryonic stem cell therapies and the only stem cell center associated with the Wuhan University department of medicine. Mr. Ferguson has won a plethora of awards for his role as a humanitarian, healthcare leader, and civic contributor.

Born in Weehawken, New Jersey, to Donald George and Margaret Ferguson in 1949, Mr. Ferguson studied economics at St. Peter's College and focused on an MBA in hospital administration from George Washington University. He entered the field with the historic St. Vincent's Hospital in New York City, and served to the position of senior vice president from 1972 to 1981. That year, he joined Hackensack University Medical Center as vice president of operations. Mr. Ferguson became CEO of the medical center in 1986, and over a period of 23 years, he grew the institution into a nonprofit research and teaching hospital with 900 beds and four dedicated hospitals for women's health, cancer, pediatrics, and cardiology. Hackensack University Medical Center was named to the listing of the 2016 to 2017 National Best Hospitals by U.S. News and World Report, ranked in four specialties.

At Blue Horizon, Mr. Ferguson was CEO of an institution that holds the promise of restoring function to victims of spinal paralysis. The cells for treatment come directly from the patient, or are harvested from donated umbilical cords. Additionally, Mr. Ferguson was entrusted with leadership at the Metropolitan Health Administrators through the '80s, and taught briefly as adjunct faculty for The New School for Social Research in New York. He was named a trustee of the former University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and served as vice chairman with University Health Systems, now known as the New Jersey Council of Teaching Hospitals.

Mr. Ferguson is a member of the American Federation for Aging Research, the American Heart Association, the American Hospital Association, and the Catholic Hospital Association. Mr. Ferguson has also been associated with the Metropolitan Health Administration Association, which presented him with a 1997 Distinction Award, the American College of Healthcare Executives, which presented him with a 2004 Regents Recognition Award, and the Commerce and Industry Association of New Jersey, which presented him with a 1997 Chairman's Award for Outstanding Leadership. Mr. Ferguson has also been active in his community, and notably serves on the board of Martha's Vineyard Community Services and Martha's Vineyard Preservation Trust. Since 2015, he has been a member of the United Nations Diplomatic Council, and supported the Garden States Foundation, the health transition team of Governor-Elect Jim McGreevey, Martha's Vineyard Hospital (where he served as Chairman of the Board from 2001-2010), the Molly Foundation for Diabetes Research, and the Bergen County Economic Development Corporation, where he served as a founding commissioner. He also served on the board of trustees of Saint Peters College, now Saint Peters University.

For his incredible humanitarian and administrative efforts, Mr. Ferguson's shelves overflow with awards, notably a 1999 Humanitarian of the Year award from the Boys' Towns of Italy, a 1998 Distinguished Citizen of New Jersey honor from the Ramapo College Foundation, a 1996 Humanitarian of the Year honor from the Make a Wish Foundation, a 1994 Man of the Year award from the National Burn Victim Foundation, a 2002 Foundation for Free Enterprise Hall of Fame induction, a 2002 Ellis Island Medal of Honor, a 1995 Distinguished Community Service Award from the Anti-Defamation League, a 1989 Man of the Year Award from Tomorrow's Children Fund, and a slew of awards for excellence in business and healthcare. In 2005, Felician College awarded Mr. Ferguson an honorary doctorate of letters for his many years of service to the state of New Jersey.
