/24-7PressRelease/ -- When John Steinbeck wrote his first novel "Cup of Gold" he worked as a caretaker in Lake Tahoe on a large estate owned by the widow of a San Francisco surgeon.
Steinbeck's nearest neighbor was two miles away so he could write in peace. There was also plenty to read in the family's well stocked library. Mostly he was content. When Steinbeck wrote he also listened to classical music. He said it improved the rhythm of his words.
In deep isolation he was able to go deep with "Cup of Gold". He knew the book would not be his best work, but he hoped it would jumpstart his career. It did.
Collecting John Steinbeck has always been expensive for two reasons. His books are desirable and his first editions in dust jackets are scarce.
On Jan. 15, PBA Galleries, San Francisco, featured a selection of Steinbeck's books in its Fine Literature sale. A copy of Cup of Gold; first edition, first issue; unstained top edge; with color pictorial jacket and light wear to edges; 1929; sold for $6,000.

Rosemary has provided auction coverage and analysis on thousands-and-thousands of antiques and collectibles sold since the column started 16-years ago. She includes auction sale results to give readers a feel for what their treasures are worth because the power of auctions is simple.
When the bidding stops and the hammer falls, the value of an item is set. The buyer, not the seller, sets the price, and this simple distinction cuts through all the chitchat about what art, antiques and collectibles are really worth. The emphasis is on today's values, not yesterday's wishful thinking.
Each week another new article is posted featuring a particular area of collecting.
• Every article showcases an auction item and how it fits into the big picture.
• A compelling, historical context is provided for the treasures people collect.
• Collecting tips are offered.
• Current "prices realized" are listed.
